6.2 Indoor Air Quality and Health

As human spends most of their time indoors performing activities, related to work or personal life, the chances of exposure increase. If the indoor environment has a high concentration of air pollution, then individuals have higher chances of developing adverse health outcomes. The adverse health outcomes vary according to the type of pollutants and individual susceptibility [18, 19]. Many studies showed that building-related symptoms (BRS) are commonly found in occupants and workers living in poor IAQ environments. BRS consist of various health conditions which can be divided into three groups—mucosal, dermal, and general symptoms. These conditions will improve or recuperate after leaving such a poor IAQ environment [20–22]. A study conducted in Thailand indicated that the residents of apartment buildings using hair styling products have a higher chance to experience general symptoms, such as headache, nausea, dizziness, fatigue, and chest tightness while using a fan or air conditioner to ventilate the air can promote IAQ and reduce the chance of having dermal and mucosal symptoms [16]. Poor IAQ is also related to poor sleep quality as reported in a study from China. A study demonstrated that Chinese cooking oil fume increased the level of 1-hydroxypyrene in the urine and it is associated with poor sleep quality [11]. Another study also found that poor IAQ condition, the presence of cockroaches, and high concentration of fungi are associated with poor sleep quality [15].

In children, asthma, allergic conditions, and decreased lung function are the common symptoms observed in children living in poor IAQ houses. Fungal spore and dampness conditions are the main IAQ problems associated with these conditions [23–26]. Moreover, a study conducted in China reported that indoor CO2 in winter can also increase the risk of asthma in children apart from fungal concentration [10].
